WASHINGTON, DC (February 25, 2025) — Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) released the following statement after voting against the House Republican’s extreme budget resolution, which will fund tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations while slashing critical federal programs and services millions of Americans across the country rely on each day.
“The extreme Republican budget is a betrayal of the American people and is a direct attack on hardworking middle-class families across the country,” said Congresswoman Valerie Foushee. “Instead of putting the American people first, Republicans are prioritizing big corporations and the ultra-wealthy with trillions in tax giveaways, all while slashing critical federal programs that millions of children, families, people with disabilities, veterans, seniors, and others depend on. Furthermore, their budget scheme will drive up inflation, increase the deficit, and raise everyday costs for healthcare, groceries, education, housing, and more.
“While Republicans have made their priorities clear, I am making mine clear as well by voting no on this harmful and outrageous budget plan. I will continue to work with House Democrats to push back against extreme policies and stand up for the needs of my constituents and all Americans, by putting their health, safety, economic well-being, and security above the interests of the wealthy elite.”
At a glance, the extreme Republican FY25 Budget Resolution includes:
-
$4.5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy
-
$1.8 trillion in discretionary spending cuts
-
$1.2 trillion in mandatory spending cuts
-
$2.6 trillion in magic “macroeconomic effects”
-
$4 trillion debt limit increase
-
A total of $1.6 trillion in increases to the deficit
Specifically in North Carolina’s Fourth Congressional District, this harmful House Republican budget resolution would:
-
Threaten food access to 68,000 children, seniors, veterans, and others who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) while making it more difficult for families to access the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program from Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
-
Widen the wealth gap by delivering an average annual tax cut of $314,266 for the richest 0.1 percent.
The House Republican’s extreme budget resolution passed today with a vote of 217-215. A copy of the budget resolution bill text can be found here.
